Green Card Lottery
More on the Selection Process
Step 1 The National Visa Center collects all applications during the Mail in period.
Step 2 Applications are then sorted for each Geographical Zone and each application received is assigned a number. The 50,000 visas are allotted to different regions according to a selection system devised by the Department of State. Each region will have a "country code" consisting of two letters : AF-Africa / EU-Europe / NA-North America / SA- South America / OC - Oceania followed by five digits. e.g.: OC 79945.
Step 3 The Lottery drawing actually occurs, applications are selected for each zone and assigned a regional rank number. After the selection process, each winning application is carefully reviewed in order to check if it complies with the DV Lottery Program Guidelines. The Department of States selects about 90,000 entries so that the 50,000 Green card allocation quota can be obtained. According to the Department of State, about 3 million application were rejected last year for lack of compliance with the DV Lottery Program requirements.
The most common causes for rejection are:
- The Application was submitted at the wrong time
- The country mentioned in your entry is not an eligible country
- The application was submitted at the wrong address
- The applicant has submitted more than one application
- Once selected, the winning application contained submissions errors
- Other reasons for rejection
Step 4 If you are a winner, the US department of State sends the notification letter to the address mentioned in your application. Non winners are not notified.
Step 5 At this point, you and your family must soon after submit a formal request for a Permanent Resident status. This can be done either from your country of residence through the consulate or from the United States. Interview occurs and the Green Card, if you meet the eligibility requirements, is issued.
