Reasons for Disqualification
According to the US Department of State, 2.7 million applications were disqualified (41 % of the total number of entries) for failing to properly comply with the Lottery Guidelines.
Here are some of the reasons why those applications were rejected:
- More than one entry was submitted. Why is this wrong?
- The application was not signed by the applicant.

- The application was not received during the mail-in period. Why is this wrong?
- The native country was not indicated on the DV envelope.

- The application was submitted at the wrong address. Why is this wrong?
- The envelope was in the wrong format.

- Other disqualifications include:
The applicant did not properly list ALL family members The application is improperly written or contained errors The application did not include the applicant's picture OR family member's pictures Eligibility requirements were not adequate. Why is this wrong?
The applicant may only submit ONE application. The Department of State only accepts one application per applicant every year. Applicants who try to beat the odds by submitting more than one application are automatically disqualified regardless of when the application was mailed. Applying again is permitted for the next Lottery. The application must be signed : If an applicant fails to sign his or her single application, the application is disqualified. The application must be personally signed with his or hers customary signature in his or hers native alphabet. The signature must be the same as the one appearing on official identification documents (e.g.: ID card or passport).
The application must be received at the right time. For last year's Lottery, (DV-2010) The Consular Center received approximately 800,000 applications before or after the Mail in period resulting in the applicant to be disqualified and the application destroyed.
The address on the envelope must be accurate. The applicant must use the correct address designated for the Native Region.
The address for the DV program changes. Although the application mailing address has been the same for a number of years, it recently was changed for this year's Green Card lottery. Be sure to check with us for the right address for the DV-2006 (not yet released) or to pre-register with our service to ensure that your application will be processed at the right time and your application will be mailed to the proper Consular Center address.
The envelope must be the right size. Standard Letter or Business Size envelope only. An entry sent by priority mail, fax, hand messenger will not be processed. More on envelope requirements.
The application must comply with all INS guidelines. All Family Members were not must be listed: The name , Dates and Place of Birth of the applicant's spouse AND children under 21 years of age must be included in the application along with all pictures. (Including legally adopted and step children who are under the age of 21 years old).
Family Members pictures must be included: Recent photographs of the applicant AND his/or her spouse and each child must be included. The name and the date of birth of each family member must be printed on the back of the photo. Family photo including more than one individual on a single picture are not accepted. Photos should be attached with clear tape and not stapled to the entry. Applicant may tape the photos on the back of the application. More on photo requirements.
The information on the application must complete AND be legible AND written in the English alphabet.
