To be a citizen of a country means to be a legal member of that country. Being a citizen of any country gives the individual both rights and duties, like the right to vote and the duty to go to war if necessary. Most Citizens of the U.S. are citizens by birth, since all children born on U.S. territory are given U.S. citizenship automatically. This is according to the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. But there are also many naturalized citizens in the United States. Naturalization occurs when a citizen of another country becomes a citizen of the United States. Several requirements must be met for an individual to qualify to be naturalized and become a U.S. citizen. The most general requirements are that applicants for U.S. citizenship must demonstrate good moral character, and be favorable towards the United States. Usually new citizens will have to take a test to show that they can speak, read, and write English. They must also show that know the principles of the U.S. governmental system, and the important parts of U.S. history.
