Reentry Permit Application
Lawful Permanent Residents in the United States, or people that have a Green Card, may apply for a reentry permit to the U.S. before they travel abroad; especially if they plan to be abroad for a while. The time spent abroad by a permanent resident could be viewed by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as an indication of how seriously an individual takes his or her permanent residence in the United States. Green Card holders who stay abroad too long without applying and being approved for a Reentry Permit could end up having trouble reentering the U.S., or even being deported. An application for a Reentry Permit must be submitted before the lawful permanent resident leaves the U.S. It’s recommended but not required to stay in the U.S. until a Reentry Permit has been approved.
